Setup GeoIP database

What is GeoIP database

MaxMind GeoIP database is geographical database which allows resolution of an IP address to its geographical location.

Where is GeoIP used

ISL Online uses the GeoIP database within the ISL Conference Proxy (ICP) to provide the following functionality:

  • Load Balancing - when a client connects to the ICP the general location of the client is obtained from the database. Based on the geolocation and server usage the optimal server in ICP grid is selected to handle the remote support session.
  • Providing time zone information - ICP will use the GeoIP database to set the correct time zones for different clients.
  • Providing additional customer information - ICP can provide location of the client in the following modules:
    • Session reports
    • ISL Light (session info)
    • ISL Pronto (client info)
    • ISL Groop

Important: Please refer to the legal notice below before you enable the last option.

How to set up GeoIP

Step 1

Purchase GeoIP Database and download it in the tar.gz format.

Step 2

Extract the tar.gz to obtain the file in the .mmdb format.

Step 3

Upload the .mmdb database to you ICP's Private (local) file storage (Configuration > Advanced > File Storage). ICP will automatically detect the database and begin using it.

Step 4

Check under Activity > GeoIP status that the new database is in use.

Please refer to the MaxMind policies regarding the usage of GeoIP database to provide additional customer information. For load balancing and obtaining time zone information the usage is considered "internal" since no geolocation is exposed to your users. To expose the customer geolocation within the ICP a commercial license must be obtained from MaxMind.
